Some girls learn how to cook or sew from their moms. Here's one thing I learned from mine: how to bargain shop.
My mom basically has a Ph.D. in bargain shopping and can save money like it's going out of style.
There is an outlet mall not too far from where I live, and I have been wanting to check it out for some time. My birthday was yesterday, so on Saturday I decided to take myself on a trip there as a special treat for my birthday/break from my summer spent doing graduate work for four classes.
Now, being that 1. I am not rolling in money and 2. I am my mother's daughter, I set myself a budget of $100 because I had a little birthday money. I also decided to visit some stores that we don't have in Huntington but whose clothes I like. I shopped around a bunch of stores, and bought things in Ann Taylor Loft, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Banana Republic, and J. Crew.
Not to brag, but I did really awesome. (Maybe I'm bragging :) ) Without further adieu, I give you my purchases:
Ann Taylor Loft:
I got this super cute romper (I love rompers!) for $25.80 (including tax). It was originally $69.99 (not including tax).
Savings = $44.19 or 63%
I got this fun and summery skirt for $14.27 (!!! -- including tax!). It was originally $61.60 (not including tax).
Savings = $47.33 or 77%
I got this white sweater (been searching for one for a while) for $19.99 (not including tax -- you can't even do that at Target usually). It was originally $49.99.
Savings = $30.00 or 60%
I also got this super cute skirt for $16.19 (not including tax). It was originally $59.99 (not including tax).
Savings = $43.80 or 73%
I got these black flats (which I have been looking for the perfect ones for some time) for $25.73 (including tax). They were originally $98.00 (not including tax).
Savings = $72.27 or 74%
So, to recap --
Total spent: $105.60 (all applicable tax included -- $5.60 over budget)
Total that would have been spent had I paid full price: $339.57 (actually more, this is without tax)
Total saved: $233.97 or 69%
WHY DO PEOPLE EVER PAY FULL PRICE FOR ANYTHING?!
I mean really.
I'm sure my mom is willing to take on some Padawan learners. Although there's something to be said for being schooled in this art from a young age.
